The 7 TOP Yoga Mats in 2018 That Make Other Yogis Absolutely Jealous

Do you want to have the same yoga mat like all other people in your class? Or do you want to stand out and even have other people ask for advice on which yoga mat is the best?

Unfortunately, many yoginis make the mistake of just going to the closest sports store to buy a cheap yoga mat or one that looks good but is of low quality. You then end up slipping all over the place, and your postures often end up being less than perfect.

We admit that we had to learn this the hard way. We did not quite understand that value means more than just getting something for a low price. Value means that you get a product that is worth the price you pay for it.

In this article, we have looked at some best yoga mats that will give you the chance to stand out in your yoga class because you will have good grip and be able to focus on your yoga, not on not looking silly. Some of the mats also come in awesome designs without ignoring other important aspects of a yoga mat.

1. Aurorae Printed 5mm Thick Yoga Mat with Non Slip Rosin

We were a bit put off when we received Aurorae’s yoga mat because there was a strong smell when we opened the package—and the description had promised it was an odorless mat. Fortunately, the smell quickly disappeared. Maybe it was the way it was packed.

Aurorae caters to customers with different tastes, so you can either go for yoga mats with lovely prints, or you can buy simple designs, eg., a blue mat without any prints.

All mats, however, have a focal point at the top of the mat, so you have an easier time aligning your body for poses like the Warrior.

We found that we had an excellent grip on the yoga mat, and it was neither too thick nor too thin. We did not feel uncomfortable at any time.

Things We Liked

  • Focal point to help you with aligning for different postures
  • An excellent selection of fantastic designs
  • Family business
  • Lightweight
  • Non-slip rosin bag for extra grip if needed

Things We Didn't Like

  • Strong smell when you unpack it but fades very quickly

2. FitlifestyleCo’s Non-Slip Yoga Mat Combo 2 in 1

If you sweat a lot during yoga, then this mat might not be the ideal choice for you—but for all others, it is worth a look. The yoga mat comes with a carry strap which is handy for people who travel around with their yoga mat.

We found that we had a good grip on the brightly designed mats—as long as we did not sweat too much. We attempted one hot yoga session with this mat and have to say it’s just not the best if you sweat like a waterfall. During more relaxed, standard yoga sessions, we had no issues at all and found it is rather lovely to look at the designs.

Things We Liked

  • No need to carry a yoga towel
  • Good grip during regular yoga
  • Bright designs lighten your mood
  • Comes with carry strap

Things We Didn't Like

  • Only three designs to choose from
  • A bit slippery when you sweat a lot

3. Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat

The Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat is a very comfortable mat, and you also have the option to buy an extra thick version of it. It’s ideal for people who prefer to have extra cushioning for their joints, especially If you do poses that require you to have a lot of contact with the mat.

We found that the mat becomes slippery when you sweat averagely. It seemed to become better after using it for a while—maybe it has something to do with the top layer of the mat. For now, we would not be able to recommend it for very sweaty people unless you wear yoga gloves.

Apart from that, however, we loved using the mat because it is so comfy and helps you to relax. The yoga mat comes in a wide variety of lovely designs. There should be a design for every taste.

Things We Liked

  • Wide variety of designs
  • Extra thick yoga mat version available
  • Very comfortable

Things We Didn't Like

  • A bit slippery

4. BalanceFrom GoYoga All-Purpose 1/2-Inch Extra Thick High Density Anti-Tear Exercise Yoga Mat

This yoga mat comes in simple designs and is aimed at the beginner or casual yogi who does not want to put too much money into their equipment and yet still get reasonably good quality.

It is a rather thick mat, and while this is ideal for comfort in some poses, it is a disadvantage for more advanced poses that require a lot of balance. The problem is that you sink into the soft foam which makes balancing over time difficult.

This mat comes with a carry strap which is convenient for people who need to take the mat to the gym or with them on holiday.

Things We Liked

  • Very soft and good cushioning
  • Very affordable mat
  • Free carry strap included
  • Does not tear

Things We Didn't Like

  • You sink into the foam
  • Not suitable for advanced yoga poses

5. Sivan Health and Fitness Yoga Set including yoga mat

If you are new to yoga or need to buy new accessories in addition to a new mat, then this set might be the ideal solution for you. The set comes with an extra thick yoga mat, two different sized towels, a yoga strap, and two yoga blocks. We thought it was excellent value as the mat alone is worth the price.

We were disappointed about the lack of different designs, but maybe you can’t have everything. The color is nice enough. It is a good mat for traditional yoga, but probably not for very sweaty people.

While the mat is very thick, you do not sink into it too much. It has great cushioning, and your joints will thank you.

Things We Liked

  • Great value pack
  • Mat is very comfortable
  • Reasonable grip

Things We Didn't Like

  • Only one design
  • Towels could be more absorbent

6. Manduka PROlite Yoga Mat

The Manduka PROlite is advertised as a travel yoga mat, but we would say that it is a bit on the heavy side compared to other yoga mats for travel.

We loved the way the mat did not move on the floor at all. Other mats sometimes move a little; this one did not. You also have a good grip on the mat itself, but the non-slip surface needs some wearing in. In the beginning, you might want to use a yoga towel on top when you do hot yoga or sweat a lot in general.

This mat comes with an unusual lifetime guarantee, and we can see why the company is so confident. This yoga mat feels and looks like a high-quality product, and we are sure you will not have to replace it for a very long time.

Things We Liked

  • Good grip on floor
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Dries very quickly

Things We Didn't Like

  • Slippery when wet for the first few months
  • Not as light as the name makes you believe

7. Jade Harmony Professional Yoga Mat

This yoga mat is made of biodegradable materials which means that it is not a mat you keep forever (you know what biodegradable means, yes?). However, this should not put you off, because for about one year (or more if you do not do yoga every day) you will have a great yoga mat.

In the beginning, you will notice a strong smell, but it will wear off over time. We had a good grip on the mat, even when we were doing hot yoga. But once you get too sweaty, you should use a towel because no mat on the planet is 100% non-slip when wet.

Things We Liked

  • Company plants a tree for every mat they sell
  • Eco-friendly materials

Things We Didn't Like

  • Mat needs to be replaced after about a year (because it is biodegradable)
  • Strong smell for about two weeks

Benefits of Using Yoga Mats

The actual benefits of Yoga, as a practice, are numerous. With the use of accessories, such as a yoga mat, the experience is even enhanced further.

Here are some of the benefits that you can expect by using yoga mats:

  • Cushioning

Even though cushioning is not the main function of yoga mats, providing a cushion between the floor and your body is a huge benefit offered by a yoga mat. Some models are thin, but those that are thicker have become more preferred these days. These types of yoga mats are ideal for heavier individuals who want to experience comfort when doing yoga poses.

  • Traction

A yoga mat is designed to offer better traction as you do your yoga poses. When doing different types of yoga postures, you need to make sure that your feet are planted solidly on the floor.

Without good traction, you may suffer from injuries caused by falling and slipping. Even though you may not necessarily fall, it may be challenging to completely concentrate on your poses and breathing if you feel your feet sliding on the floor.

  • Warmth

Yoga mats are designed to have an insulating layer that can be used for cold floors. It may not be comfortable for you to lay down on a cold floor, and it may even result in your muscles losing warmth, thus making stretching quite difficult.

  • Balance

A yoga mat can also help with balance. It usually comes with a soft surface which allows your feet to sink more, providing better support. This soft base also enables your feet to roll easily for any needed adjustments.

Features that You Need to Look For in a Yoga Mat

Here are some features that you need to look closely into before purchasing a yoga mat:

  • Thickness

Considering the thickness of a yoga mat is very important because it determines the level of comfort that it can provide. The standard yoga mat thickness is 1/8 inch. There are thinner ones, while there are also others that are thicker.

As a guide, consider the amount of room you have for storage, as well as the level of portability that you expect out of it. If you do not mind carrying a heavier one, going for a thicker choice is a good option as it can give you better comfort.

  • Material

The material used in the construction of a yoga mat dictates its overall stickiness, texture, sponginess and eco-friendliness. It can even determine how it will fare through time. Most yoga mats are made out of PVC or vinyl. However, you can also go for organic options such as the use of cotton.

Take into consideration your preferences. After all, you might be allergic to certain types of materials.

  • Texture

The yoga mat texture determines the amount of traction that it can provide. If you want to have a mat that can help in preventing slips, you may want to go for those made of rubber, cotton or jute, as they come with a tactile, raised pattern.

How to care for your yoga mat?

Once you start using your mat, you also need to take care of it—no matter which company you use. If you sweat a lot, you will need to clean the yoga mat regularly unless you do not care about smells and dirt.

Most mats can just be wiped down with gentle cleaning products. Yoga mats usually come with care instructions that tell you what kind of products you can use.

You might want to invest in a proper yoga mat cleaning spray. It is easy to use and comes in handy if you do not have much time (or interest) in extensive cleaning procedures.

If you go for a combination yoga mat, you can often just put it in a front loader washing machine and wash it on a gentle cycle.

The winner is …

It is never easy to choose a winner when there are so many good products. It was a close call but in our opinion, the yoga mat from Aurorae stood out. The mat does not only come in simple as well as inspiring designs (you can choose from plain colors or images), it also comes with excellent customer service as the company is run by a family that actually cares about their clients.

While we did not need the non-slip rosin, we did test it and thought that it is a nice addition for people who sweat a lot and need some extra grip on their mat. We personally felt that we got a lot of value from this yoga mat—and will continue to do so for a long time.
