What is the correct Tummo way?

  • Side Channels: Now visualize two side channels. They start from each nostril and come down on either side of the main channel after passing through the eyebrow level to merge right below the navel.
  • Empty It Out: Imagine your body is empty and hollow. There are no internal organs and no weight – only light, which shines through your skin.
  • Ball of Light: Imagine a small, hot ball of fire or light inside you. It is placed right below your navel and is a source of constant energy.
    In fact, this is the reason why Tummo is also called Inner Fire Meditation. It asks you to visualize fire and light inside you.
  • Growth: Breathe in slowly. With each breath, feel the oxygen feeding the ball of light and making it larger and hotter.
  • Hold It: Focus your breath on that ball and hold your breath for 5 to 15 seconds (for beginners).
  • And Again: Exhale slowly, and repeat the process from step 2 onwards.

 

How can you get better at this?

Tummo, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation method, is said to be among the most challenging meditation techniques. Its ability to produce results heavily relies on powerful, detailed visualization.

You shouldn’t expect to become a master overnight – we don’t either. It will take some time and some faith before you see the results.

With every passing day, however, you can do a few things to get closer to the balance you desire in life. Some of these guidelines are as follows:

  • Make the exercise more challenging. Hold your breath in for longer durations (Some of the masters of this method are said to be able to hold their breath for several minutes at a time).
  • Make the visions clearer. The aim is to forget your surroundings and truly believe that you are full of light and positive energy.
  • Sit for longer sessions. You might start with 10-15 minutes of Tummo every day, but try to stretch it to half an hour, or even one hour with time.

 

It sounds kind of demanding. How can you make it a part of your daily routine?

We understand that you, like everyone else, have a lot of daily responsibilities to attend to. And you don’t need to compromise on them to become good at Tummo Meditation, or reap its benefits.

You can set aside a small amount of time every day to practice it – perhaps half an hour. This will also show results in your professional and personal life over time.

The Indo-Tibetan monks who mastered this technique used it to perform extreme feats. These include raising one’s body temperature, surviving extreme cold, drying cold and wet clothes using body heat, and melting ice sheets using body heat, among others.

Astounded? So are we.

All of that was done using Tummo. Now, you probably don’t need to be able to perform such acts, which is why you don’t need to dedicate too much time to this meditation.

Your goals are probably going to be relating to focus and harmony in life. For that, extreme dedication is not necessary at all.

  1. Interesting read. I haven’t heard of tummo meditation but it sounds a lot like kundalini and a bit like hara breathing. there are some differences but some similarities as well. Thanks for sharing!
