5 Best Yoga Mat Bags in 2018: Light, Easy To Carry And Clean

A Short History of the Yoga Mat Bag

In the old days, yoga was taught on the open ground. A patch of grass would be used to soften the impact of the gravity.

Eventually, practitioners are starting using rugs and animal skins to add to their comfort level and increase their yogic experience. This was extremely expensive at the time.

The first modern yoga mats were developed in Germany. Ever since that day, the modern yoga mat has been used in studios around the globe.

All these new mats required some form of easy transportation. It is important to keep your yoga mat in a case when not being used.

Plenty of different mat bags are on the market now - and we’ve tested a whole lot of them to bring you reviews of the five best yoga mat bags!

At a Glance: Overview of the Yoga Mat Bags We Tested

We have tested more than just five bags, but we won’t introduce the average and poor performers to you. There were five bags we were impressed with.

While the Large Yoga Mat Bag by Gecko Active, the Fit Spirit Tree of Life Exercise Yoga Mat Bag, and the Fit Spirit 7 Chakra Exercise Yoga Mat Bag are mainly for carrying your yoga mat and not much more, the other two bags, the Peace Yoga Mat Carrier Tote Bag and Gaiam Yoga Mat Tote Bag are suitable for people who would like to pack more than just their yoga mat into a bag.

2017's Reviews of the Best Yoga Mat Bags

1. Large Yoga Mat Bag by Gecko Active

Some of us use extra thick yoga mats for extra comfort, so we also tested them on large yoga bag. You can just fit in one of those mats if you roll it very tightly, but you will not be able to fit in anything else.

For people who use a regular mat, however, this bag is ideal, and you can even fit in your yoga pants and shirt. It is a simple bag, mainly meant to carry your mat.

There are three different pockets for smaller items which are a handy addition to a yoga mat bag.

What We Liked:

  • Six lovely designs to choose from
  • Premium quality zippers
  • Six-month warranty
  • Double-lined interior

What We Didn't Like:

  • Stitching around the carrying strap seems a little flimsy, not sure how long it will last
  • Not suitable for very thick yoga mats

2. Fit Spirit Tree of Life Exercise Yoga Mat Bag

We have to admit that we had to have this bag because we are huge Lord of the Rings fans, and the design reminded us of the white tree of Gondor. It is just beautiful!

Fortunately, we did not regret testing this bag, and many of the team agreed that the bag is a good selection. It is easy to wash when necessary, and the various pockets are ideal for small items like keys.

The zippers seem sturdy so far, and the material looks like it is made to last. We did not like the strap very much as it might be uncomfortable if you need to carry the bag for a longer time.

Apart from the mat, you will not be able to fit much in, but if you only need a bag that does one job well - i.e. carrying a yoga mat while looking awesome, this is an excellent choice.

What We Liked:

  • Charming, inspiring design
  • Cargo pockets for keys, cell phone, and other small items
  • Easy to wash
  • Sturdy

What We Didn't Like:

  • Strap could use a bit more cushioning for more comfort while carrying
  • Not much space for anything but your mat
Fit Spirit 7 Chakra Yoga Mat Bag

3. Fit Spirit 7 Chakra Yoga Mat Bag

The arrival of this yoga mat bag was a bit of a shock as we had expected a different color. It seems like the bags are a lot brighter in real life than on the photos, so you need to be prepared for that.

The design is still lovely, though, just a bit bright. It is a great bag that has a drawstring to keep things from falling out and a handy pocket for smaller items.

The strap is adjustable, so you can make it as long or as short as you need to carry it comfortably.

What We Liked:

  • Lovely chakra design
  • Adjustable strap
  • Good quality materials

What We Didn't Like:

  • Only for standard size mats, and even then, not much space left
  • Colors are brighter than shown on sales pages

4. Peace Yoga Mat Carrier Tote Bag

This tote bag for yoga mats comes in handy if you would also like to carry your other yoga items like yoga towels, straps, blocks, and pants in the same bag.

This bag is spacious and has zippered pockets for small items. However, the top is closed in a different manner with Velcro straps. Some might prefer this, but we found it a bit odd.

Larger mats might not fit as the bag is not long enough to accommodate anything but regular sizes. For people who use a standard size, however, the bag is ideal, and you can easily put your clothing on top of the mat and still have space for a water bottle and other things.

What We Liked:

  • Beautiful design
  • Spacious
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Zippered pockets for easy access to smaller items

What We Didn't Like:

  • No zip to close the main compartment
  • Bigger mats might not fit lengthwise

5. Gaiam Yoga Mat Tote Bag

Gaiam Yoga Mat Tote Bag

Gaiam is a very well-known company when it comes to yoga products, so it is no surprise that their yoga mat tote bag convinced us, too. While the designs are beautiful enough, they did not quite impress me as much as others.

When it comes to functionality, the bag is hard to beat, though. You could even fit in two mats if you wanted to (though we do not recommend it). It comfortably holds everything you need for your yoga class and the magnetic snaps mean that closing and opening the bag is very easy and quick.

The inner pockets have a zip so that nothing can fall out, and it makes organizing your items very easy.

What We Liked:

  • 100% cotton
  • Handy outside pocket
  • Multiple inside pockets for easy organizing
  • Closed with magnetic snaps for easy access

What We Didn't Like:

  • Designs a bit uninspiring
  • Cannot be stored inside because of inability to close completely

What You Need to Consider When Buying a Yoga Mat Bag?

  • Many bags include secure zipper pockets for your valuables. Some even have special padded chambers for your laptop or other delicate electronics.
  • If you are going to yoga practice from a location other than your home, you may find it convenient to bring your yoga clothes with you rather than wearing them to your previous engagement. Also, yoga cushions can be easily transported. Some yoga mat bags are designed to carry everything.
  • Yoga bags are not one size fits all. You should carefully consider what size and style bag can meet your requirement.
  • A great yoga bag should be lightweight.
  • A durable, and well-built bag will last you many years. Make sure to check for manufacturers warranties and additional quality assurance plans.

A lot of bags are coming equipped with a security style zipper pocket for your cell phone. Losing a cell phone can ruin even the most peaceful yoga practitioner’s day.

Our Personal Favorite When It Comes to Yoga Mat Bags

While all bags we introduced here have their advantages, we all decided that the Gaiam yoga mat bag was our favorite. It offers everything you need if you regularly have to pack for a visit to the yoga studio.

Head over to Gaiam’s website to have a look at their products. While we prefer other designs, there’s no way denying that Gaiam produces top quality products for Yoga.
