Ultimate Guide To Choose The Best Pilates Mat in 2019

Pilates has become a very popular way to work out—but you will not have much fun with it if you do not choose a good exercise mat.

A good Pilates mat is vital for your joy and success in Pilates as the exercises often require you to be on the floor, and that can be uncomfortable if there is not enough cushioning and may even lead to pain in the joints.

To avoid unnecessary pain and to be a bit more comfortable, you need to choose a Pilates mat that suits your needs and fits your body type. A mat that is perfect for a small woman is not the ideal choice for a man that is almost two meters tall!

Fortunately, there is a wide variety of exercise mats on the market and with a little help, it will be easy to find the mat that helps you to make the most out of your sessions.

2019's Reviews of the Best Pilates Mats

This thick Pilates mat ticks all the right boxes: it is comfortable, easy to clean and does not move around when you move on it. It also comes in a nice selection of colors—which is always a plus in our eyes.

It is the ideal mat for people who are new to Pilates and not quite sure whether they are going to stick to it. Unfortunately, it does not last very long, especially if you train regularly. The delicate sponginess disappears after a few months of Pilates, and you will have to get a new mat unless you are all right with feeling a bit closer to the hard floor.

Considering that the price of this exercise mat is not very high, you get a magnificent deal with this one. Some of the more expensive mats do not provide such a good non-slip surface—so you might not have an issue with replacing this one now and then as you still pay less than for some of the big names

Things We Liked

  • Great selection of different colors
  • Thick exercise mat that feels very comfortable
  • Carry strap included
  • Easy to clean
  • Non-slip surface

Things We Didn't Like

  • Material loses its sponginess after a while
  • Needs replacement after a while
PhysioWorld 10mm & 15mm Thick Exercise Mat

PhysioWorld’s exercise mats come in two different thicknesses—and both are suitable for Pilates. The thicker one is ideal for people who suffer from problems with their joints while the thinner one is right for all others.

The mat is light enough to carry around and also comes with a handy carry strap, so there is no need to buy that on its own.

There is not a big selection of designs (basically, you just get plain colors), but the available options are very soothing.

The big plus for these mats is that they are slip-proof no matter what kind of floor you use them on.

Things We Liked

  • Two different thicknesses available
  • Very soothing colors
  • Includes carry strap
  • Non-slip

Things We Didn't Like

  • Not a great variety of colors
Reehut 1/2-Inch Extra Thick High Density

There is not much we can say about this mat when it comes to negative points. All we could complain about is that you do not want to use it on slippery surfaces as the mat’s bottom side isn’t very slip-proof.

On standard surfaces, though, this usually is not a problem. The mat is ideal to use on hard surfaces as it provides gentle cushioning without feeling too soft.

The mat keeps up with your Pilates classes and comes in three different colors. Thanks to the thickness it is a bit on the heavy side, but unless you are fragile, this should not be an issue.

Things We Liked

  • Ideal to use on hard floors
  • Multipurpose mat
  • Bright colors
  • Comfortable

Things We Didn't Like

  • Not good on laminate floors or other slick surfaces
  • A bit on the heavy side

This exercise mat is specifically designed for Pilates, and you will notice the difference to general exercise mats. The mat is made of NBR foam to provide excellent cushioning. It is a mat that feels comfortable, yet also sturdy.

This Pilates mat is great for home use but thanks to its lightweight, it is also easy to carry. It comes with removable shoulder straps which also make traveling with this mat comfortable.

You usually sweat a lot during Pilates, but the closed cell foam of this mat is non-absorbent which makes it easy to clean, and you do not have to worry about germs multiplying in hidden places.

Unfortunately, this also means that the surface can become rather slippery when wet, so we would recommend using a towel on top for additional grip if you feel that this is a problem.

Things We Liked

  • Comfortable mat
  • Non-absorbent surface for easy cleaning
  • Lightweight
  • Carry straps that can be removed

Things We Didn't Like

  • Only two colors available
  • Becomes slippery as the surface is non-absorbent

Choose the right size

Exercise mats come in different lengths and widths. It is important that you choose a size that is appropriate for you. You will not be a happy Pilates practitioner if you do your exercises on a mat that is too short or not wide enough.

Which thickness is the best for a Pilates mat?

Some people are not sure about when they need a thick gym mat and when an exercise mat with typical thickness is the better choice.

Individuals who started out with yoga, for example, often go for thinner mats as they are used to needing balance from their mat. They know that many of the thicker mats are not suitable for yoga, so they assume the same goes for Pilates.

Pilates, however, is a different type of exercise, and thicker mats are an excellent choice.

The extra cushioning is good for your joints, especially when you do exercises that require you to lie on the mat. You do not want to feel uncomfortable while doing so.

Some people easily get sore joints when they use a thin mat, so the best option usually is a mat that is a bit thicker.

The weight of the exercise mat

Most people go to Pilates classes, so you should choose a Pilates mat that is not too heavy to carry around.

Pick a color you like

Exercising often needs motivation. If you look at your Pilates mat and feel depressed, then that is not a good thing. Do not just go for the cheapest option, buy a design you enjoy. Use a Pilates mat in your favorite color. It will make a huge difference.

If you can only buy one Pilates mat, our recommendation is ...

Pilates Mad is not the cheapest Pilates mat on our list, but the additional cost is worth it in our eyes—especially if you are in it for the long run.

The two different surfaces create just the ideal environment for your Pilates workout. Your mat will not move around on the floor while you make your moves, and you can feel safe and confident.
